Quick Fix for Short Term Puffy Eyes

If you have been crying, or have puffy eyes because of a rough night, then you just need some quick relief. An at-home remedy may be all you need.

Start by making sure you are well hydrated. Alone or in combination with any of the other causes of puffy, baggy eyes, dehydration is an easily remedied culprit that has many other detrimental effects on your appearance and overall health. Make sure you aren’t eating too much salt because that is another easily eliminated cause for dark circles under your eyes.

An age-old remedy that is simple and inexpensive is to chill cucumber slices and put them directly on your closed eyes. Lie back and relax for ten minutes, then wash your face. It feels amazingly refreshing and will really help with those dark circles.

Potato slices can be used the same way, or juice extracted by grating a potato can be used by applying it to your eyelids and under-eye area with a cotton ball. Let it sit for 10-15 minutes and rinse off. This should help with both dark circles and puffiness.

There are many more home remedies for this common problem, but these two are popular because they are so simple and get results.

Eliminating Allergens May Be Necessary to Reduce Puffy Eyes

A runny nose and itchy eyes along with puffy eyes are good indicators that you are suffering from an allergy. Seasonal allergies change day by day, and the fact that you haven’t been allergic to something in the past doesn’t mean you aren’t allergic now. It’s common for allergies to start during adulthood, so be aware that even if you don’t normally suffer during pollen season or other times of the year when people you know are complaining about allergies, if you wake up with itching and eye puffiness, the reason could be as simple as that.

Unfortunately, environmental allergens are not easy to avoid, but there are a few things you can do to minimize the impact. Sleeping with the windows closed is a big one. Make sure your air conditioner has a clean filter so that it removes pollen and other allergens as air cycles through the system, and doesn’t introduce contaminants from outside.

Minimizing your time outdoors will also help if allergies are the cause of dark puffy circles under your eyes. That’s a challenge when the weather is beautiful but worth the effort to keep you from having even worse reactions.

Dietary allergens are another type to look for. Think about whether you have eaten anything new in the last few days. You may be mildly allergic; not enough to be an emergency, but enough to cause a reaction. Similarly to environmental allergens, though, even if you haven’t made any changes to your diet, you could have developed a reaction to something you’ve always eaten, so it’s worth experimenting with eliminating certain foods for a week at a time to see if it makes a difference.

Chemicals are another source of allergens that can cause swollen eyelids and puffy eyes. Be especially attentive to any reaction to new cosmetics, but also be aware that the chemical culprit doesn’t have to be used near your eyes to cause a problem.

Check for a Medical Condition Underlying Puffy Eyes

An eye infection can cause swollen eyes. Puffy eyes accompanied by swelling throughout the body could be a sign of a systemic disease, and should be checked out by a doctor.

Don’t take risks with your eyes—see a doctor if you have symptoms of any of these conditions.
